I am a Japanese doctor who holds a medical license in Japan. I run a clinic in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, and provide medical services to nearly 100,000 Japanese patients annually.
DYM International Clinic opened in 2014 as the first medical institution run by a Japanese in Thailand.
The reason why I established a clinic in Bangkok is because I felt that there are various problems in Thai healthcare compared to Japan.
I used to manage an IT company in Thailand and came to Thailand frequently, but I felt that Thai hospitals and clinics had various problems, such as "medical examinations were low or lax compared to the level in Japan," "explanations of medical conditions were not thorough," and "the amount of medicine prescribed was not suitable for Japanese people. We have been trying to improve the quality of medical care in Thailand as much as possible to meet the needs of Japanese patients.
We try to provide the same level of prevention, consultation, treatment, and explanation as in Japan as much as possible. For example, because Japanese and Thai people have different body shapes, eating habits, climates, and enzymes that metabolize drugs, there are drugs and doses that are effective for Thai people but too strong, too weak, or ineffective for Japanese people.
We are confident in the quality of our Thai doctors, and we make every effort to hire doctors of high caliber. Compared to Japan, the level of Thai doctors is really quite different. We are proud that we are able to recruit and train only the top 1% of the best doctors in Thailand. We also put a lot of effort into recruiting and training interpreters and comedians.
In addition, we would like to play the role of "family doctor" in Japan.
In Thailand, there are many more lawsuits against doctors than in Japan, and there are many Thai doctors who only see children in pediatrics, or obstetrics and gynecology in obstetrics and gynecology. However, we would like to play a role as a "family doctor" and try to "examine the whole body as much as possible, even if it is not our specialty. If there is any problem, such as the possibility of a disease that is not your specialty, we will refer you to the most appropriate specialist.
Unlike university hospitals in Japan, hospitals in Thailand generally rent out their examination rooms to doctors. In other words, the hospital as a whole is like a group of sole proprietors. For this reason, even if you go to a large hospital, you are often "passed around from one private practitioner to another who only treats patients in your specialty.
In Japan, the national policy is to have "family doctors" who refer patients to appropriate medical institutions such as university hospitals when there is a problem. The price of a direct visit to a university hospital or a general hospital is set to be high, so as far as possible, direct visits are discouraged. Of course, there are patients who still end up in large hospitals, but in such cases, a doctor called a general practitioner is assigned to the patient. However, in Thailand, we believe that there are almost no doctors who can act as general practitioners, and we would like to take on this role so that patients are not left in large hospitals and serious illnesses are not discovered, as is the case at present.
We also have group medical institutions in Japan, the U.S., and Hong Kong, and we exchange information with other doctors in this group, so we are confident that we can provide appropriate treatment for Japanese patients. For example, there are diseases unique to Asia, such as dengue fever, and it is necessary to change the way of thinking about vaccination and treatment between Thai people, who are more likely to be exposed to such diseases from a young age, and Japanese people, who were not exposed to such diseases at all when they were young. We are proud to be able to provide the highest quality medical care in Thailand because of our frequent discussions on these issues. Similarly, we are able to provide vaccinations for children in Japan and Thailand, where vaccination methods, medications, and timing differ, in consultation and collaboration with Japanese doctors, so that we can provide the best possible vaccinations.
